Bio

I believe that life is too short to devote it all to one career.

In a sense, I feel I have lived many different lives as a result. I started out as a youngster interested in how things went together, learned business at a young age through buying and selling cars and bikes, working in bike shops, and having other small ventures. I worked the entire time I was in college and got my undergraduate and graduate degrees in business in four years. When I started my “real” career, I worked hard and did what I was told and as a result was fairly successful early on. I became an owner in the first A/E firm I worked in at age 25.  I went on to a successful career in a couple executive posts in larger firms but knew that no matter how good of a job I had, I would never be happy unless I had my own business.

Inspired by the TV show “Thirtysomething” that was on in the mid-80s, I eventually struck out on my own and started my own management consulting and publishing business. Thanks to finding a good partner in Fred White as well as many other great people, in the years that followed we built a very successful, high-growth firm that became a brand name known throughout the Architecture/Engineering/Environmental Consulting industry.

My first marriage ended when my then-wife developed serious alcohol and drug problems. The need to spend more time close to home with my children required a recapitalization of our firm (now ZweigWhite) and that, in-turn, allowed me to relocate to Fayetteville, Arkansas, and start anew with my second wife, Katie, and two daughters, Christy and Anna. Both of my older girls went to college locally at the University of Arkansas and I was lucky enough to get a teaching post in The Sam M. Walton College of Business here as well. Katie created her own art studio (Zweighaus), birthed our youngest daughter, Olive Josephine Zweig, and became an adjunct professor in Landscape Architecture here. We decided to launch our redevelopment firm, Mark Zweig, Inc., and since, have enjoyed transforming Fayetteville one house at a time.

Life is short—live life to the fullest!
