I acquired 3 Bridge Street—a 5200 square foot, cedar-shingled post & beam house from 1970, built on 6 acres abutting the Charles River in Dover, Massachusetts, from the attorneys handling the estate of the late mechanical engineer, Albert R. Shames.
It had been left vacant for nearly two years and was quite badly mouse-infested but the price was right for a house that size in a fantastic town. The entire house was rehabbed—an elevator addition removed from the back—the 50,000 gallon pool rebuilt, a new pool house added, and the exterior and interior of the house restored to better than original condition. The house featured five bedrooms, three cars of heated garage, 1500 square foot ground level motorcycle room with fireplace, built-in generator, 1867 railroad safe, 8-zone heating system with boiler and instant hot water, mahogany-paneled library (it took one man nearly a month of full-time work to strip and refinish it!), huge entry hall with see through fireplace, 29-foot living room, wainscoted library, beams everywhere, and a whole lot more. We even rebuilt nearly 600 feet of dry-stacked stone walls at the street.
